Job Description:

Junior Platform Engineer

Location: USA Alexandria, VA

The platform engineering team at SGSS, a Parsons company, designs and implements systems supporting successful development and deployment of satellite ground station software. Our engineers apply their knowledge of software, operating systems, networks, databases, architectures, and tools to improve the maintainability and operability of software systems. We are currently searching for a full time junior Platform Engineer to support our engineering team in Alexandria, VA. If you've previously held roles in software, build/release, architecture, IT automation, site reliability, or DevOps, you may be a good fit for our team. In this role, you will help continue expansion into cloud infrastructure and application deployments by providing practical knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and other products in the Red Hat ecosystem. You will help build, integrate, and harden systems containing government-off-the-shelf, commercial, and open-source software. Your ability to distill requirements and propose technology solutions to engineers outside the platform team will be critical.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Automate configuration, monitoring, and hardening of labs and production systems in physical, virtual, and cloud environments.

  • Select and integrate commercial and open-source tools to improve the operability of satellite ground software and infrastructure.

  • Develop tooling that streamlines internal development and QA experiences.

  • Assist in day-to-day system administration tasks to keep infrastructure running smoothly.

  • Travel, up to 25%.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Virtualization and cloud platforms such as OpenStack, AWS, VMware, RHEV, Docker, or OpenShift/OKD/Kubernetes.

  • Proven experience embedded with a project team to integrate DevSecOps deployments to meet project requirements.

  • Provisioning physical and virtual servers with Red Hat Satellite.

  • Familiarity administering and troubleshooting Linux hosts and networks (load, LVM, RPMs, scripting, DNS, routing, firewalls).

  • Applying and troubleshooting configurations with Ansible, Salt, Puppet, AWX/Tower, or similar.

  • CI/CD pipelines in GitLab, Jenkins, etc.

  • Proficient with git.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have an active DoD Top Secret security clearance. (Must be a U.S. Citizen). Note: Those with a Secret level clearance may also be considered if they meet certain eligibility requirements to obtain a Top Secret.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science/Engineering or other relevant Engineering field from an accredited university or equivalent combination of formal education and experience.

Preferred Experience and Qualifications:

  • DoD 8570 IAT Level 2 compliant certification (e.g., CompTIA Security+). Those without this certification will be required to obtain one within their first 6 months of employment.

  • Two (2)+ years of increasing responsibility in relevant positions, with at least two years in a Redhat Enterprise Virtualization or OpenStack centric environment.

  • Familiarity with monitoring and log aggregation: Elasticsearch, Logstash, Beats, Sensu, LibreNMS.

  • Configuring or administering PKI at small scale
