Job Description:

  • Parsons is now hiring for experienced Road/Highway Design Engineers to add to our team in our Centreville Virginia office , to support projects in Virginia, Washington DC, Maryland and other states as needed. ( Work options from Arlington VA and Washington DC offices are available).

Our team has supported VDOT, DDOT, and MDOT clients, as well as municipal and private clients for both conventional and design/build projects. We have designed and constructed major interstates, HOV lanes, complex interchanges and marquee bridges in the region and as a company, we have transformed over 100,000 miles of roads and highways around the world! We have been a leader in both conventional and Integrated design and delivery of civil infrastructure for more than 75 years.

In this role, you will be working on a variety of engineering design tasks, while collaborating with our team of Project Managers, engineers and designers. You will develop design plans, cost estimates, specifications, horizontal/vertical geometrics and other design deliverables for projects in the region. As a Road/Highway design engineer with us, you will be leading and/or supporting an interdisciplinary team to create sustainable multimodal transportation infrastructure in a wide range of contexts from complex roadways and streetscapes in highly urban settings to roadways in rural setting within environmental sensitive areas. You could be supporting both conventional, as well as design/build programs.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Independently develops and/or supervises the creation of engineering products that meet customer quality requirements. This includes defining the problem, establishing the work scope, preparing the budget and schedule, planning the work, providing technical direction, and reporting the work status.

  • Typical products may include detailed calculations, right-of-way and construction drawings, procurement(Bid) documents, shop drawings and as-build drawings review proposal evaluations, technical reports, and detailed analyses.

  • In addition to product development, you may coordinate with clients, contractors, utility companies, subconsultants and various disciplines within company. Provides support for other engineering activities as required. May supervise one or more subordinates and provide input regarding performance.

  • More Sr. level engineers may be assigned to a project or organizational team, as a lead engineer for a specific discipline on a small to intermediate-size project.

  • Provides input and technical guidance to CAD Designer/Drafters, Designers, and lower-level Engineers working on the same project.


  • 4-year degree in Civil Engineering (or related field)

  • 3 years or more of road/highway design experience

  • EIT is required, PE preferred, for higher level candidates

  • Experience with Microstation required.

  • Experience with GEOPAK, and InRoads or OpenRoads is preferred.

  • Experience working with DOT standards is required. Experience with VDOT or MDOT is preferred
