Field Services Student – Soil Management

The Edmonton Valley Line West (EVLW) LRT project is a 14-km long line extension of Edmonton’s growing LRT System. It is the first LRT extension project using low-floor vehicle technology in Western Canada and will be a landmark LRT endeavour after the 5-year construction term. Marigold Infrastructure Partners (MIP) is the Joint Venture group that has been selected to design and build this portion of the ELVW.

STUDENT OPPORTUNITY : 4-month term, starting May 2022, located in Edmonton, Alberta

The Field Services Team is looking for a student to provide support to the MIP Team in implementing the soil management program for the EVLW LRT. The duties will be varied and will focus on tasks/activities required to meet our compliance obligations. Candidates should be physically able to negotiate terrain on an in-process construction site

Specific responsibilities are listed below.

HOURS OF WORK: Our business hours are Monday to Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; however, the student may be required to work overtime hours, including weekend and evening availability as needed, to participate in the completion of a monitoring task.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide Management with data and project analysis.

  • Decommissioning on the project - following Well decommissioning procedure/ maintaining log and list of supplies used + notifying when restocking is needed / filling out decommission records and handing off to Supervisor / Work with all construction groups to decommission wells in conjunction with excavation activities.

  • Geotech Materials Testing- Meet with 3rd party testing groups in field to help facilitate collection of samples. Act in some cases as field contact for other MIP construction groups plan out testing locations.

  • Confirmation materials testing- working with environmental personal on site and 3rd party testers in collecting samples at contaminated sites

  • Creating and maintaining Well decommission records. Submitting as needed to supervisor and to MIP environmental personnel

  • Help in maintaining records from Geotech and Contamination testing

  • Maintain imported fill records that are accurate to source locations, destinations and units used to moved material

  • Contamination materials Testing

  • Imported fill monitoring

  • Coordinate disposal locations (Off and On-site)

  • Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to review the quality of completed work.

  • Monitor progress and assist in the provision of job cost reports to management on active projects.

  • Provide data and input for month-end reconciliation.

  • Must be self-motivated and work well with minimum or no direct supervision.

  • Use data generated from excavation activities and soil movement fill in ParADMIN® soil tracker or similar soil tracking software. Data entry will be extensive because it will be reflecting of load-by-load movement of dirt on the project.

  • Provide technical support to field staff.

  • Other administrative duties as required.

Required Knowledge and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in a university or technical college program in Civil/ Environmental Engineering and/ or a Sciences degree

  • Experience in the construction industry is a strong asset.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (both oral and written) skills.

  • Organizational and time management skills.

  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task/ Service orientated.

  • Thrive on a fast-paced environment.

  • Adaptable to flexible work schedule when required to meet deadlines.
