Parsons is seeking well qualified applicants for a Research Assistant with the Genomics and Bioinformatics Department of the Biological Defense Research Directorate (BDRD). Headquartered in Fort Detrick, Maryland, BDRD is part of the Naval Medical Research Center. Their mission is to apply bioinformatics and cutting edge, high-throughput technologies such as genotypic and phenotypic expression profiling, biomarker characterization, bacteriophage science, etc. to the study of infectious diseases, biodefense, and enhanced global disease surveillance for early pathogen detection and response.
Provide practical knowledge of basic and applied research, including experimental design and methods, and shall possess the demonstrated ability to perform original and competent research.
Support research that conducts high throughput 'omics' analyses of pathogens, near neighbors, and environmental samples, to include biosurveillance, pathogen discovery, and biomarker characterization.
Utilize existing laboratory personnel and assets to provide general laboratory support, including BSL-2 and BSL-3 capabilities.
Conduct validation studies and provide general laboratory evaluations utilizing organisms of interest requiring BSL-2 and BSL-3 controls.
Perform whole genome sequencing of samples using the MiSeq, NextSeq500, Ion Torrent, or MinION platform as appropriate given chemistry constraints and output desired, for bacteriophage and other (bacterial host, etc.) genomes.
Contribute high quality reference sequences to improve the comparator databases.
Provide support in Probe/Primer design, assessment of sensitivity and specificity, surveying pathogens in environments and clinical samples.
Support whole genome sequencing of complex samples (e.g. swabs, stool, etc.) and isolates using unbiased shotgun sequencing, amplicon sequencing, enrichment sequencing and/or a combination of approaches as required.
Testing and evaluation of new protocols to include; generation of coding complete genomes using in silico closure methods, phylogenetic and molecular epidemiological analyses.
Preparation of data files and submission to databases as appropriate.
Support verification and validation of countermeasures against emerging pathogens
Securely store data files and provide final results to customer, and if requested, raw data files.
Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, or relevant biomedical sciences
Experience: 2 years (minimum) relevant experience in the field of microbiology.
Shall pass all criteria for Secret security clearance.
Must be able to obtain, maintain and/or currently possess a security clearance.
