SENIOR SCIENTIST / Range and Training Land (RTLA) Coordinator, FT IRWIN, CA

The Range and Training Land (RTLA) Coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing, and managing a natural resource monitoring program for the training lands at Fort Irwin, CA as part of the Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) Program.

Project Need:

  • Plan and execute a monitoring program to quantify both short-term and long-term impacts of military training activities and support management decisions.

  • Develop and implement monitoring protocols and assessments of training land condition including soil condition, vegetation condition, maneuver trail condition, culverts, heavy use sites, and burn areas.

  • Coordinate and conduct data collection to include training and supervising field crews.

  • Conduct sound and effective analysis of collected data and make recommendations for the use and implementation of those findings.

  • Identify equipment and materials necessary to perform monitoring tasks.

  • Prepare the RTLA Annual Report on all monitoring activities and results; provide a summary of RTLA activities for inclusion in the ITAM Annual Report.

  • Assist the Land Rehabilitation Coordinator in identifying areas in need of rehabilitation and assessing the effectiveness of land rehabilitation projects and methods.

  • Provide technical review and input to various environmental documents, research proposals, and installation plans.

  • Assist in the preparation and presentation of educational materials to inform soldiers and civilians about how to sustain and improve Army training lands.

  • Interact with installation agencies to coordinate the wise and sustainable use of military training lands.

  • Provide technical assistance and advice to military trainers, range managers and environmental personnel to include assessing impact of resource management on military training and training impact on natural resources.

  • Provide RTLA input to ITAM programmatic plans, work plans, and budgets.


  • Bachelors Degree in Biology, Natural Resources or related field combined with a minimum of five years relevant work experience, or a Masters Degree in the above listed fields with a minimum of three years relevant work experience.

  • Relevant work experience designing and implementing field studies preferably in a desert and/or military environment

  • Knowledge of desert ecology, vegetation, and soils.

  • Experience analyzing vegetation and soils data

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Intermediate level ArcGIS experience

  • Experience driving a 4WD vehicle in difficult terrain


  • US driver’s license.

  • US citizenship.

  • Ability to successfully pass NAC-I (National Agency Check with Inquiries) investigation.

  • Ability to use computers and familiarity with Microsoft Office products.

  • Ability to walk distances of up to 1 mile over rough terrain and perform repetitive tasks that require bending or kneeling.
