Job Description:
A Construction Inspector position is open in the Facilities Engineering Design and Inspection Services (FEDIS) Group office, serving NASA at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Madison County, Alabama, near the city of Huntsville. Ideally, the successful candidate will have substantial construction inspection experience and have a thorough understanding of construction drawings and methods of construction.
Job Description:
Primary assignments are monitoring construction activities to ensure conformance with MSFC standards, including construction and performance specifications, code requirements, and contract construction drawings.
Interpret and understand content of construction contracts, including specifications, plans, applicable codes and standards, field reports and laboratory tests
Duties include performing daily field inspections, generating and maintaining inspection records, identifying punch list items, performing and/or witnessing various testing operations, and assisting in commissioning activities.
Additional duties include reporting construction progress to the client, verifying contractor safety meetings are regularly conducted, and diligently reporting contractor safety violations and incidents.
Perform review of design drawings for constructability purposes, to aid in design development of construction drawings.
Participate in pre-bid site meetings with project managers, resident engineers, and interested contractor representatives.
Participate in pre-construction meetings with project managers, resident engineers, and construction contractor representatives.
Interact with government clients related to definition and implementation of requirements associated with various aspects of surveying, construction, and facilities design.
Assist client project managers throughout the construction period of a project.
Requirements:
Knowledge of principles and practices of construction
Education/Experience:
Minimum requirement of achieving a high school diploma or GED equivalent
five years or more of construction inspection and related experience
Must pass a criminal history/security background check and pre-employment drug testing.
Required to have a valid driver's license and good driving record
U. S. citizenship required
Possess skill in communicating effectively in written and verbal forms.
Have capacity to exercise independent judgment and initiative in inspection of small and large scale construction projects
Physically able to work and walk in outdoor/construction site environments, operate motor vehicle, climb stairs, and similar activities
Perform work both outdoors and indoors at construction sites, and sometimes in areas adjacent to vehicular traffic.
Occasionally perform moderately strenuous tasks, such as lifting and carrying instruments weighing up to 40 pounds over rough terrain.
Wear personal protective equipment when tasks require it.
Working knowledge of MS Word and Excel
Ability and willingness to assist engineers, designers, drafters, inspectors, administrative personnel, and other staff members as needed
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Post-secondary coursework in construction related disciplines; engineering degree and professional engineer registration a plus
Three or more years of experience in inspection of high-pressure utility lines
Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)

Salary Range:
$56,900.00 - $99,600.00
