Veterinarian
San Antonio, TX
Parsons is seeking a Veterinarian to support Naval Medical Research Unit – San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) and its collaborating institutions in the conduct of research in Combat Casualty Care and Operational Medicine, Craniofacial Health and Restorative Medicine, and Directed Energy. NAMRU-SA’s mission is to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of DoD personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations.
The Veterinary Sciences Department (VSD) Veterinarian will work in parallel with staff researchers to provide expertise and work for Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approved research studies. The Veterinarian will serve as an advocate for subject welfare and mentor junior Veterinarian Technicians.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Provide subject matter expertise (SME) work for research projects involving animal models.
Provide support for writing protocol-focused research proposals, animal use protocols, technical reports, final reports, and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
Ensure study procedures are in accordance with IACUC and animal use regulations, proper set-up of experimental equipment, and study staff are trained for experimental procedures.
Evaluate health status of subjects and serve as advocate for subject welfare.
Promote animal husbandry by providing animal care suggestions.
Provide on-call assistance during protocols, typically by phone.
Provide support in development of in vivo and in vitro model systems, data acquisition, and data analysis.
Develop presentation materials, research Standard Operating Procedures, and present findings at technical and professional meetings.
Develop and maintain knowledge of standards of veterinary care in relation to relevant research models being utilized.
Conducts and supports surgical procedure, operating room maintenance, animal disease prevention and health surveillance, appropriate animal housing, and record keeping.
Manage laboratory and contract personnel associated with large and small animal husbandry.
Required:
Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine (DVM) with at least three (3) years of experience.
Ability to use sound judgment in problem solving and excellent interpersonal and communications skills required.
Applicants selected for employment will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet additional eligibility requirements for access to classified information or materials.
Desired
Experience with animal model research.
Preferred experience within a military/DoD research setting.
