Supervises the warehouse operations of the Naval Health Research Center of the Operational Infectious Disease Directorate. The supervisor will provide guidance and direction for a staff that includes the receipt and sending of biological samples, sample tracking in the site’s database, and coordination for supplies and equipment maintenance necessary to support the operations. The Supervisor will also supervise the adherence to safety protocols and provide guidance necessary for the logistics necessary for safe operations to include response to abnormal conditions.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES (Please list the major activities/types of assignments):
Coordinates specimen shipping and receiving activities.
Works underneath a biological safety cabinet, receives specimens, and verifies specimen acceptability.
Performs laboratory data entry, scans various data forms and case report forms
Maintains working logs, work schedules, and records of activities.
Organizes and files laboratory paperwork, instruction manuals, and binders.
Oversees a wireless system that records temperatures for laboratory equipment.
Calibrates minor equipment including but not limited to timers and thermometers.
Coordinates appointments for repair and upkeep on major laboratory equipment including but not limited to centrifuges and freezers.
Assists with laboratory equipment inventory.
Must be able to be on call and respond to equipment issues 24/7.
Assists the laboratory with archiving and retrieving specimens for additional testing.
Assists with the coordination of the laboratory’s respirator protection program and phlebotomy training program.
Revises standard operating procedures (SOPs) to include safety and equipment management.
Assists with the coordination of all aspects of the safety and health program for laboratory staff.
Assists with both internal and external agency audits of laboratory spaces according to QA guidelines and safety concerns.
Gives safety presentations to laboratory staff on a regular basis.
Serves as a point of contact for College of American Pathologist (CAP) questions pertaining to laboratory safety, equipment and facilities.
Oversees day to day facilities issues with local staff for resolution.
Provides document support for the procurement of major equipment including contacting vendors for quotes, and development of sole source justification and scope of work documents, as needed.
Assists with the receipt and distribution of incoming laboratory supplies that are purchased.
As needed, oversee laboratory facility renovations, serve as the liaison between laboratory staff and construction staff to ensure biological safety and space requirements are met per local and federal regulations.
Contributes to the team effort by accomplishing related duties as needed.
Performs other responsibilities associated with this position as may be appropriate.
2-year degree or certification in related technical field (or equivalent) and 10+ years of related experience, including some experience in a lead capacity.
Strong written and verbal communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills are required. Additionally, a demonstrated proficiency in keyboard skills and software related to work assignments is required, as well as a working knowledge of company policies and procedures.
