Traffic Engineer / Planner I – San Diego, California


The Transportation Engineer / Planner will perform a variety of engineering tasks by applying standard engineering techniquesto analyze multi modal transportation systems and make recommendations that benefit users. Evaluate traffic control devices, intersection controls, freeway traffic operations, and overall safety elements to assist all roadway users (vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists).


  • Support Senior level engineers with traffic engineering design and traffic studies.

  • Develop signal timing plans, signing and striping, mitigations measures, and traffic management plans.

  • Conducts relevant analysis and reports all findings in accordance with relevant state local and federal regulations.


Qualified candidates will present the following:

  • 4-year degree in Civil Engineering or related field.

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in the field of traffic, ITS and/or transportation engineering.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong HCS and Synchro/SimTraffic skills.

  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills (Lookup formulas, pivot tables, etc.)

  • Possess Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certificate.

  • Working knowledge of the MUTCD, AASHTO, HDM and HCM.

  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or MicroStation design software.


Ideal candidates will present the following:

  • Masters degree in Engineering or Planning

  • Traffic signal or roadway design experience

  • Working knowledge of VISSIM and/or Aimsun

  • Working knowledge of GIS software such as ESRI ArcGIS

  • Some experience in Python scripting, or the desire to learn.

  • Some exposure to travel demand forecasting tools such as TransCAD

  • Caltrans project experience
