JOB SUMMARY: The En Route and Critical Care Department focuses on emergent militarily relevant issues that could be immediately deployed onto the battlefield. Recent efforts have concentrated on elucidating the potential effects of early and prolonged aeromedical transport on combat injured casualties. In addition, operationally relevant devices and methods for caring for combat casualties in the field are also studied. The Department has the capability to evaluate the effects of aeromedical evacuation (flight) in both large (swine) and small (rats, mice) animalsThe incumbent would provide technical support to investigators for in-vivo studies of traumatic brain injury, hemorrhage and polytrauma, models in accordance with IACUC approved animal protocols in large and small animals. Duties will include performing animal handling, anesthesia monitoring, surgical procedures, blood sample collection and processing, utilization of equipment for physiological data acquisition, data recording and analysis, and intensive post-operative care of experimental animals. At the end point of the experiment, tissue collection for histopathology will be collected at necropsy. Additional duties will include entering experimental data into Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel and GraphPad, as well as data processing, laboratory and animal record keeping, and other duties as assigned. Individual must possess excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, time management, and computer skills. Previous experience with laboratory animals preferred. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: 80-90% of time1. Assisting with/or performing surgical and experimental procedures in support of research studies of traumatic injury, hemorrhagic shock and prolonged field care in swine and rats.2. Provide intensive supportive post-operative care to experimental animals including observation, assessment and appropriate experimental treatment in consultation with appropriate veterinary and/or scientific staff.3. Operating specific instruments related to the experimental design, performing protocol related technical procedures and experimental data collection (i.e. blood sample collection and processing, infusions, monitoring and recording of physiological parameters, euthanasia, tissue collection, etc.)4. Data entry, processing and analysis using Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access database or equivalent programs.5. Basic statistical analysis using GraphPad prism6. Writing and preparation of protocol, abstracts, manuscripts and poster/ slide presentations.7. Laboratory management duties including supply inventory and procurement, routine maintenance of laboratory equipment, assure compliance with departmental and facility SOP's and policies. NONESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: 10-20% of time8. Assisting with/or performing basic laboratory procedures (biochemistry or cell based assays)9. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor. JOB SPECIFICATIONS: Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must have a general working knowledge of common animal procedures and laboratory techniques. Experience with animal handling, administration of anesthesia, basic surgical procedures, post-operative care and specimen collection/processing is required. Previous experience with laboratory research animals and an appreciation of animal welfare issues preferred. Computer proficiency including knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel,PowerPoint or similar is expected. Must demonstrate ability to learn new procedures and to work independently. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of team. Must be willing and available to work early mornings, late evenings, occasional overnights, weekends and/or 'on-call' shifts.REQUIRED EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE:
College degree or higher degree in animal science, biological science or similar field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
2 to 3 years previous experience with animal, research laboratory is preferred.
