Job Description:

Parsons is currently recruiting for a Ecologist/Biologist to lead the Terrestrial team based in the Greater Toronto Region. The ideal candidate would be looking for opportunities to lead tasks, help organize workload for the ecologist group and continue to grow as an ecologist. The successful candidate will be responsible for the collection, analysis and interpretation of biological survey data and the preparation of various technical reports. The successful candidate will be required to support the project team in various aspects of project management and delivery and may be required to work in the field and travel to job sites throughout Ontario.


  • Lead, coordinate and conduct field studies following established protocols and classification systems to complete surveys and natural environment inventories including breeding bird and amphibian surveys, three-season floral inventories, Ecological Land Classification assessment, Wetland evaluation, Species at Risk (SAR) Screening, and obtaining permits and approvals;

  • Prepare deliverables to characterize the natural environment to document terrestrial sensitivities and complete assessments of development related impacts on the natural environment including impact assessment studies, mitigation plans, technical reports and environmental monitoring reports for regulatory approvals;

  • Consult and liaise with regulatory agencies to obtain background information, SAR information, review of terms of references, delineation of environmental studies/features, and respond to agency review comments.

  • Oversee the acquisition of environmental permits/approvals and development of protection and mitigation measures according to environmental legislation, policies and guidelines

  • Develop environmental mitigations and commitments to be include in design drawings and contracts documents;

  • Responsible for project planning, scheduling and allocation of personnel and resources;

  • Oversee and manage collection and quality of field data and ensure appropriate analysis and management of data is adhered to;

  • Contribute to the growth and facilitate the trajectory of the natural sciences group within Parsons;

  • Contribute to the preparation of proposals, grant applications for prospective work opportunities;

  • Provide mentorship, guidance and training to junior and intermediate staff;

  • Ensure all project work is completed in accordance with Parsons health and safety policies and practices


  • 8+ years of experience;

  • Post-secondary education in ecology, environmental science, or related field;

  • Experience in the identification of Ontario flora and fauna (trees, shrubs, wildflowers, grasses, birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and/or insects, including SAR);

  • Experience in identifying and assessing terrestrial ecological impacts;

  • Experience conducting Bat Acoustic Surveys;

  • Expert knowledge of Ontario environmental legislature including the Endangered Species Act including obtaining permits and approvals under relevant legislation and regulations;

  • MTO and infrastructure experience;

  • Certification in Ecological Land Classification

  • Certification in the Ontario Wetland Evaluation System

  • Arborist certification considered an asset (or potential to obtain such);

  • Experience with construction monitoring

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently; and

  • Ability to work in both field and office environments

  • Ability to mentor intermediate and junior ecologists;

  • GIS experience;

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; and

  • Must be able to travel to and from various work.

Parson’s Ecological Services Group works both in support of other internal groups (primarily transportation/highways and stormwater management) and also as an independent unit completing ecological assessments and monitoring duties directly for various clients.
