Operations Manager - Abandoned Mines, Northern Canada

Opportunity

Parsons has been successful in winning environmental and mining remediation projects in Northern Canada and will be aggressively pursuing additional northern projects.

Key Expectations

Lead hourly employees and get results through others. Think ahead and plan over a specific time span and prepare action plans to achieve results. Balance and achieve positive results in the areas of safety, quality, environmental, plant reliability, productivity, cost efficiency, waste reduction, and employee relations in a unique environment. Manage multiple priorities.

  • Oversee and manage water pumping and water treatment operations, maintenance activities and facilities management

  • Responsible for maximizing the volume of contact water captured and treated

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, environment, community, and the ability to work safely.

  • Ensures EHS awareness and compliance with federal and territorial regulations and guidelines

  • Identify and initiate actions to prevent the occurrence of any nonconformities relating to product or process

  • Develop and execute short and intermediate term strategies that support the successful operations and maintenance

  • Manages quality of operations

  • Reviews, develops and analyzes SOPs

Key Tasks include, but are not limited to:

Safety

  • Ensures a safe work environment for all employees and performs accident investigations as required.

  • Performs safety process audits including work areas, housekeeping, workplace inspections, etc.

  • Performs task observations of employees to look for areas of improvement.

  • Provides daily safety talks with all employees and encourages active participation.

  • Implements new safe work practices and procedures.

Technical

  • Develop and maintain both short and long term operational plans - To include all aspects of activity (production planning & scheduling, maintenance planning & scheduling, equipment rebuild or replacement, capital projects, etc).

  • Ensure maintenance best practices are implemented and sustained for all mobile and stationary equipment

  • Recognize operational, technical and safety challenges, take action to prevent or overcome them, and continuously seek improvement.

  • Monitor and report progress.

  • Effectively work with other team members in areas such as project management, construction, health & safety to ensure cross-functional communication and delivery of goals.

Staff Supervision

  • Supervises hourly personnel as needed in performing their daily work assignments.

  • Monitors employee's performance, including; safety compliance, absenteeism and tardiness, work practices and adherence to plant and federal rules/procedures/regulations, work efficiency, job tasks and assignments, etc.

Requirements

  • Diploma or degree in related field (or equivalent experience)

  • 10+ years of work experience managing northern mining projects, northern construction, or northern environmental remediation projects

  • 5+ years of experience in a management role for a mining, construction, or remediation project costing at least $10 million/year, including project wide responsibility for health and safety and environmental compliance

  • Good understanding of the operation of mechanical and electrical systems

  • Must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Must be able to operate self-sufficiently in field environments

Preferred

  • Knowledge of Yukon and Northwest Territories mine acts and regulations

  • Familiarity with surface water management, groundwater management, and water treatment processes
