Job Description:
Parsons is looking for an amazingly talented Indigenous Culture and Language Advisor (ICLA) to join our team! In this role you will get to increase the knowledge and understanding of local Kaska culture and history among the entire project team and on-site .
What You'll Be Doing:
The primary role of the Indigenous Culture & Language Advisor promotes the use of Kaska language and increases the knowledge and understanding of local Kaska culture and history among the entire project team and on-site. This position will provide guidance, mentorship and support to our indigenous staff and help identify and resolve barriers to indigenous staff on-site. The successful candidate will be able to advise on cultural initiatives and activities and inform culturally relevant presentations for the project.
This part-time position works from home and is part of the Socio-economic Unit managed out of the Whitehorse Office. Travel to/from Ross River and the FMRP work site is required, travel per diem will be provided.
Key Deliverables and Expectations:
Works in collaboration with the Kaska Community Liaison Officer, Training Development Coordinator, and site management.
Supports and advises managers on the development of cultural initiatives that develop the FMRP work site into a positive working environment for Kaska staff.
Provides insight into cultural aspects of the project that supports a healthy and positive outcome for indigenous staff and the project.
Act as a positive role model and Kaska advocate within the project.
Advise management when a higher level of support or resourcing is required in the area of cultural awareness and/or cultural sensitivity.
Provide Kaska language and translation support for the Project work site.
Assist in integrating Kaska language and culture into the project.
Act in the strictest confidential and professional manner at all times, including outside regular working hours.
Perform other related duties as requested.
What Required Skills You'll Bring:
5-years related experience as a respected elder and knowledge keeper.
Demonstrated experience in working successfully with Indigenous groups and individuals within a small remote northern community
Written and verbal communication skills in the English and Kaska language and a deep knowledge and understanding of Kaska culture.
Ability to work independently and as an integral member of various teams.
Ability to meet deadlines prioritizes assignments, and maintain confidentiality.
Proficiency in computer use.
Motivated self-starter and with strong interpersonal skills.
Highly professional in all aspects of business and interaction with all staff, clients, and community members.
