Ready to put your scientific expertise to work on innovative research to advance protection and treatment of the warfighter from infectious disease? We are seeking a Medical Research Assistant to support research and program objectives related to infectious disease.This position supports efforts of the Naval Medical Research Center (NHRC), Operational Infectious Diseases located in San Diego, California.
Serveas the representative for the Naval Health Research Center at theirassigned military treatment facility or recruit training center. Thisincludes the ability to interact with military staff, doctors, and othermedical professionals and build professional, trusting relationships asrelated to study protocols.
Initiateand promote biosurveillance studies in military training facilities underdirection of program/clinical coordinators.
Monitorthe medical clinic to identify subjects who meet the case definition forongoing studies.
Obtaininformed consent from study participants and complete study paperwork.
Collect(nasal/oral/nasopharyngeal/rectal) swabs, stool or other appropriatebiological specimens from subjects and necessary sample collection information.
Apply proper safety proceduresin handling potential disease-bearing specimens and hazardous materials.
Applyaseptic techniques to sample collection and handling for downstreamprocessing.
Properlylabel and store specimens according to standard operating procedures(SOPs).
Readand follow all other Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and studyprotocol documentation.
Responsiblefor knowing the proper international shipping procedures of diagnosticspecimens.
Performbasic laboratory procedures as instructed by a supervisor to include, butnot limited to pipetting, centrifugation, and making aliquots.
Performsrequired quality control procedures and fills out designated worksheets.
Maintainan accurate inventory of all supplies and places orders when necessary incoordination with team members on and off site.
Maintainsorganization and housekeeping of the office and laboratory space.
Performbasic administrative duties to include, but not limited to, copying,labeling, and filing of study related documents.
Assistin the coordination and completion of laboratory equipment maintenance.
Providereporting to NHRC supervisory staff on a weekly or as requested basis.
Contributes to theteam effort by accomplishing other related duties as needed.
Preferred Skills andAbilities:
Skill in use of word processing, spreadsheets, graphic, email, anddatabase software.
Ability to plan and prioritize work.
Ability to distinguish colors.
Ability to give a presentation (informed consent) to individualsand groups.
Ability to be a self-starter and work independently.
Ability to interface comfortably and professionally withinvestigators, research staff, and study participants.
Ability and willingness to travel to other clinics as needed.
Knowledge of basic laboratory and safety procedures.
Ability to perform continuous and sometimes long periods ofrepetitive work.
College degree from an accredited university
0-2 years of related experience
Prior experience in research or a clinical setting isdesired
U.S. citizens ONLY due to government or federalrequirement
