Safety Specialist, Yellowknife NT


Parsons is the Construction Manager of the Giant Mine Remediation Project. This is a world class remediation project using innovative methods to deliver a safe environment. The project is expected to last over 10 years and is located just outside the City of Yellowknife, NWT.

Parsons is seeking a Safety Specialist to provide general oversight for safety, health, and environmental support, and assist and advise a project or program manager in ensuring that the site-specific SH&E plans, workplaces, and operational tasks being conducted conform to Parsons’ risk management practices and comply with the prevailing regulatory and client SH&E requirements. This is for a mining operation / remediation project in Yellowknife. This is a full-time onsite role and does not have in and out flight privileges.


  • Represents the SH&E manager or director on project or program worksites.

  • Advises and assists the project or program manager and other project personnel in conforming with Parsons’ Environmental, Safety, Health, and Risk Program (ESHARP) management system, Parsons’ policies and procedures and NWT OHS standards and NWT mine regulations

  • Oversees the health and safety program for the employees and contractors working at the site.

  • Audits the project or program and its worksites against corporate standards. Creates and submits written audit reports.

  • Inspects worksites to detect hazards and provides expertise to project or program personnel to eliminate/control the SH&E risks associated with exposure to the hazards. Creates and submits written inspection reports.

  • Effectively implements Parsons’ occupational injury and incident reporting and management processes.

  • Initiates and conducts thorough incident investigations and root cause analyses using defensible protocols. Works collaboratively with the project or program manager, craft workers, and other project or program personnel to identify effective corrective actions. Creates and submits comprehensive investigation reports and lessons learned.

  • Performs trends analyses on audit findings, inspection findings, and incident reports. Creates and submits regular analysis reports.

  • Represents Parsons during external regulatory or loss control inspections of project worksites.

  • Regularly seeks active and personal participation from the project or program manager, craft workers, and other project or program personnel to identify SH&E improvements and to implement the improvements.

  • Assists the project or program manager with new hire orientation.

  • Performs regulatory and best practice SH&E training. Creates and maintains SH&E training records.

  • Conducts risk assessments for upcoming work and provides SH&E subject matter expertise to work planning processes.

  • Interface in a professional manner with co-workers, clients, contractors, and third parties in a manner consistent with contract agreements and the applicable standards of reasonable care.

  • Participates in routine safe work briefings.

  • Responsible for managing the security subcontractor to: Ensure protection of the public, employees, environment and the mine site infrastructure and facilities within the Giant Mine Lease area.

  • Coordinate emergency medical services, inventory control of basic PPE for all visitors, conduct portions of site orientations, and medical monitoring sample collection for all onsite workers.

  • Ensure that the mine site remains in compliance with the Northwest Territories Mine Health and Safety Act, permits and licenses issued by the Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board (MVLWB) and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).


4-year degree in occupational safety and health or related field or equivalent experience, and 3 + years of related work experience in the field of occupational safety and health.

Working toward a CSRP or CSP certification

Extensive knowledge of Canadian safety and health regulations, acts and reporting requirements .


Requires high-level knowledge of federal and territorial SH&E regulations and reporting procedures, high-level knowledge of safety-related national consensus standards (e.g., CSA, ANSI, NFPA), and exceptional oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
